"Barbara Reid has combined favourite traditional
nursery rhymes with her very modern use of plasticine
illustrations. The result is a book to be treasured.
Using top and bottom borders of white lattice
entwined with vines on each page, she skilfully
adds characters and objects from the rhyme (usually
one per page) The bottom lattice cleverly serves
as a fence, a bench, a floor, the ground or a
table. The top, in addition, is used to hang objects,
or serve as a backdrop. The characters are superb!
They are dressed in old-fashioned clothing, and
are exquisite! Tiny and detailed, they capture
the flavour of the past. A few additions such
as a real gold chain, and pins for a pin cushion,
make them even more realistic. Even the page numbers
and the title are done in Plasticine. The rhymes
are printed in large, bold type suitable for independent
readers. This would be a first choice purchase
for an elementary school library."
